What is Lupus?

Some brief information about Lupus

- Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of various parts of the body, especially in the skin. joints, blood and kidneys.

-An autoimmune disease is when the immune system looses its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues. Then the immune system makes antibodies directed against itself, or kills its own good cells

-Lupus is not contagious, you can't catch it from someone else

-Lupus is not Cancerous

-Approximately 1.5 million Americans and 5 million people worldwide have a form of Lupus

-The cause of Lupus is unknown

-Infections, antibiotics, ultraviolet light, extreme stress, and certain drugs may play a critical role in triggering Lupus

-90% of people that have Lupus are women, my dad was part of the 10% of men that get Lupus

-20% of people with Lupus  will have a relative who already has or may develop Lupus, yet studies still maintain it is not genetic, I'm not sure if I agree with that finding

-5% of the children born to women that have Lupus will develop Lupus

-Lupus is very difficult to diagnose as the symptoms of Lupus come and go and  may mimic other illnesses

-Lupus ranges from mild to life-threatening

-Thousands of Americans die from complications of Lupus each year
